“Tell me, what are your names?”

“Pam.”

“Steve.” I move them slightly on the stage so they are standing a little way apart from each other, facing the audience, with me in the middle.

“Okay, I want you both to look straight ahead, close your eyes, and concentrate, because in a few seconds you’re going to feel some weird sensations.” I touch their shoulders.

“Each of us has something called chi. Our energy. Let me show you all what happens when I combine their energy together. Pam, in a few seconds, I’m going to touch you on the face.” I touch Steve lightly on his nose. “Did you feel that, Pam?”

She nods, her eyes tightly closed. “Can you show me where I touched you?” Straight away, she points to her nose. No hesitation. I hear murmurs from the audience. “Okay, Pam, now you’re going to feel a weird tickling.” I touch Steve’s chin and gently tickle it. “You feel it, right?”

Pam says, “Yes.”

I look out into the audience with a grin. “Can you show me where?” Her hand flies straight to her chin.

Next I tweak Steve’s back, not too hard, but hard enough that he twists away from me a little. Suddenly, Pam says, “Ouch.” “Now, don’t open your eyes and tell me if you felt something strange,” I say to her.

“Yes.” Pam is nodding.

“Really? What did you feel?”

“A pinch.” There are exclamations of surprise from the audience. They’re loving it. “A pinch? Where?” I don’t really have to ask this last question. Pam is already pointing to her lower back, rubbing it as if it’s slightly sore. “Amazing!” I say. “Now open your eyes.” Pam blinks a little at the surroundings, and looks first at Steve, then at me. “How do you feel?” I ask her. She smiles.

“Good,” she says slowly, waiting. She’s trying to figure out what’s up. “Let me tell you something,” I add, my hand on her shoulder. “The audience is not applauding, because they are in shock.” I nod out at the audience, laughing.

“Remember that I touched your nose?”

Pam says, “Yes.” I turn to the audience.

“Did I touch her nose?”

Everyone shouts, “NO!” They are gleeful. Pam is bewildered.

“I didn’t touch your nose. I was touching Steve’s nose. Remember that I tickled you on the chin? Did I tickle her?”

“NO!” screams the audience, including Steve. He’s laughing, caught up in everything.

“I didn’t tickle you. I was tickling him. I didn’t pinch your back, I was pinching his back!” Pam stands there, amazed, looking to Steve for confirmation. He’s nodding and laughing, and reaches over to give Pam a hug. She’s still shaking her head, unable to believe it.

“I felt it,” she says to Steve, to me.

“So, do you know what this means? It means that every place that I touch Steve,” I pause while tapping his chest, “you will feel it too!” Pam smiles. Everybody’s laughing like crazy. “No, really,” I say. “Let’s take it to the next step.” I lead Pam and Steve over to a couple of chairs and let them sit down.
